Weather guide: Best time to visit Vietnam
Rubicon Tours.

The weather in Vietnam can be split by region. In Hanoi & the north, May to October is hot and humid with high rainfall; November to April is cooler and dry. In the far north, December & January can be particularly cold. Central Vietnam experiences hot, dry weather between January & August when temperatures can hit the mid-30°C’s; whilst high levels of rainfall can occur in September, October & November. Southern Vietnam is generally dry and hot from November to April, and warm and wet between May & October, with the highest rainfall in June, July & August.

Weather overview

There is not really a right or wrong time to visit Vietnam as during most months of the year you will experience both sunshine and rain in varying quantities. Welcome to a country with 2000 + miles of coastline and three different weather systems.

Whilst Vietnam is typically warm and humid, the weather can vary significantly from one region to another due to the country’s length. At times there has been snow (yes white snow!) in the mountainous far north whilst the beaches in the south enjoyed 32 °C and sunshine.

It pays to imagine the country as three separate destinations when researching weather for your intended visit and the following information will hopefully help you unravel the complexities.

Mountainous Far North

Sapa, Ha Giang, Bac Ha, Mu Cang Chai

The climate in Sapa and Vietnam’s north-west region including Mu Cang Chai is divided into two seasons: the dry season runs from October to late March with the wet season lasting from April to September. It can get very cold and frosty in December and January, especially at night.

SAPA TOWN: CAT CAT VILLAGE – FANSIPAN MOUNTAIN IN 2 DAYS 1 NIGHT

The best months to travel in the north-east (Ha Giang) is during the dry season, from October to April, although December and January can get very cold. We recommend avoiding travelling in Ha Giang during the rainy season (May to September).

Trekking and adventure:
The best trekking conditions in Sapa and around Mu Cang Chai can be experienced between September & November, and from March to May. Daytime temperatures range from 15-28°C, and night-time temperatures from 10-18°C. Trekking and cycling are possible year round, however the winter time can be rather chilly, and the summer rather wet.

TRAVEL HA GIANG LOOP TOURS IN 3 DAYS 2 NIGHTS

North Vietnam

Hanoi, Halong Bay, Cuc Phuong, Mai Chau & Ninh Binh

Hanoi and North Vietnam has a distinct winter and summer season. The cool but mostly dry winter lasts from November to April when temperatures average 17-22°C with the coldest months being January – March.

2 DAYS 1 NIGHT HANOI WALKING TOUR – HALONG & LAN HA BAY TOUR (OVERNIGHT IN HANOI’S OLD QUARTER)

Summer lasts from May to October when it is hot and humid and the region experiences its highest rainfall. July to September are often the wettest months of the year. During these months severe weather can prevent junks sailing in Halong Bay although such weather is rare.

Central Vietnam

Hoi An, Danang, Hue, Dalat, Quy Nhon & Nha Trang

Hoi An, Hue & Danang in the centre of Vietnam have hot and dry weather from mid-January to late August, with temperatures often reaching the mid-30’s °C. During the winter months the rainfall increases with October and November achieving peak levels, occasionally in the form of typhoons.

HUE 1 DAY CITY PRIVATE TOUR ~ PICK UP FROM DANANG OR HOI AN TOWN

Hue is often cooler than Hoi An, especially early in the year. In addition, with each sitting on opposite sides of a small mountain range the weather can often differ between the two greatly on any given day.
Quy Nhon is a six hour drive south of Hoi An and shares a similar weather pattern although the dry season is slightly longer due to its proximity to the southern system.

At the far south of Central Vietnam, Nha Trang benefits from a longer dry season (typically January to September), with high temperatures and little rain . The rainy season runs from October to early December with almost half the annual rainfall falling in October and November.
Dalat, in the central highlands, is wet from June to October making outdoor pursuits problematic. From November to May it is far drier although cold in December & January.

4 DAYS 3 NIGHTS NHA TRANG BEACH – DA LAT FLOWER CITY

South Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City, The Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc & Con Dao, Phan Thiet & Mui Ne, Ho Tram & Long Hai

VISIT HO CHI MINH CITY – CU CHI TUNNEL – MY THO IN 4 DAYS 3 NIGHTS

With temperatures remaining constant year round, the climate of the south is split into two simple seasons, wet and dry. The dry season begins in November and ends in April/early May with late February to May being slightly hotter and more humid. The wet season lasts from May until early November with the months from June, July & August receiving the highest rainfall of the year. Throughout much of the wet season rainfall is generally heavy but short lasting, often occurring in a mid-afternoon heavy downpour.

The average temperatures in the south range between 25 – 35°C year round.
In the far south, the islands of Phu Quoc and Con Dao can be enjoyed year-round, with high chances of sunny days, although if visiting outside dry season, afternoon downpours should be expected.

Bac Lieu Province is approximately 100km from the southernmost tip of Vietnam. It is most famous for storing a great deal of flora and fauna, which make the great contribution to the natural balance of Vietnam. If your interest is about watching various colorful birds, know that the bird sanctuary is situated in Hiep Thanh Province of Bac Lieu Town. Within the Mekong River Delta, the Sanctuary ranks among the most engaging and charming ecological tourist sites. It’s a great pastime to indulge your eyes with the lively cute birds.

Over a century ago, Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is reported as the vestige of forest which ran along the East Sea coast. The tourists can easily reach the sanctuary as it’s just about 5km from the town center. The forest region is now the home of about 46 bird species, 7 frog species, 60 fish species, 10 species of mammals, 100 species of plants, and 8 reptile species. There stands a rich collection of species available. Once setting foot in this area, the tourists eagerly see that there are an enormous number of eggs on the ground, and various species of 2m wingspan birds in the air.

BAC LIEU PROVINCE – THE LARGEST CITY IN MEKONG DELTA

The Sanctuary is an ideal zone where generations of birds are born (often in the rainy season) and grown. There are tens of thousands of birds and nets here. From May to October, the birds mainly assemble in the southernmost tip of Vietnam. Then, in August and September, these beautiful birds begin building nests and breeding. The whole scenes are fulfilled in green and promoted with the birds’ songs. In the Sanctuary, the visitors should expect to meet the water birds, such as stork, heron, teal, night heron, and cormorant. An interesting fact about Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is that in the past, it was a coastal diversified salt forest floor associated with the ingenuous salt-marsh ecosystem. The local people very appreciate the nature, so they always attempt to protect it. To most of them, the Sanctuary is a valuable natural property, and of course it is.

Your free time in Bac Lieu tourist destination is boosted via a short visit to the bird sanctuary. Remember, the early morning is the best moment to watch the birds leaving their nests and looking for foods. Besides, sunset is another ideal time when the birds return to their nests to sleep. Eagerly snap the moment when many flocks of birds fly one after another. Such the breathtaking sight will please your eyes and refresh your mind indeed. At the time, it feels like you’re free from every dump.

Rubicon Tours.

As one of oldest cities in the world, Hanoi certainly has its own way to stand out from fellow Southeast Asian cities. Its rich culture is reflected on one of the most ancient historical sites: the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. In this article, we will walk you through the best architectural and cultural patterns of this phenomenal site, which earned it the title of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 2010.

8 INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT HANOI

The origin of the Citadel dates back to the 7th century, when its very first foundation was set up. Vietnam was under Chinese invasion at the time, and a Chinese fortress was said to be built in the area. In 1010, King Ly Thai To moved the capital from Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh) to Dai La (former name of Hanoi) and renamed it Thang Long. The Citadel was built in the same place, over the top of the torn-down fortress. From then on, the Citadel had remained the center of regional political power for 13 consecutive centuries.

The Imperial Citadel was expanded under Tran, Le and Nguyen Dynasty, with several occasions of major destruction by war. It remained the seat of the Vietnamese Court until 1810, when Emperor Quang Trung moved the capital from Thang Long to Phu Xuan (now known as the Imperial City of Hue). The ruins roughly coincide with the Hanoi Citadel today.

The royal palaces and most of the structures in Thăng Long were in varying states of disrepair by the late 19th century with the upheaval of the French conquest of Hanoi. By the 20th century many of the remaining structures were torn down. Only in the 21st century are the ruin foundations of Thăng Long Imperial City systematically excavated.

In the 21st century, the central sector of the imperial citadel was listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site on July 31, 2010 at its session in Brazil, as “The Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long – Hanoi”

Despite all the destruction and invasion across the centuries a few structures do remain and have since been loveling restored. These include the imposing Doan Mon gate which marks the southern entrance to the royal palace, the steps of Kinh Thiên Palace and the Hậu Lâu (Princess’ Palace).

Looking to escape the bustling city? The Tra Que vegetable village is a quiet, tranquil and lush green farming area. Lined with neat rows of planted herbs and vegetables. A far cry from the busy streets and incessant horn-honking just around the corner.

CHARMING HOI AN

Introduction to Tra Que Vegetable Village

Tra Que Vegetable Village is 3km far from Hoi An old town on the direction of northeast. This land was created more than 300 years ago when the locals were predominantly fishermen. However, after discovering the advantages of the Tra Que lagoon’s seaweed manure and the village’s rich fertile soil, locals began growing vegetables and herbs and have been doing so ever since.

The village supplies fresh and organic vegetables to restaurants, hotels, and local people in Hoi An, other districts in Quang Nam, and Da Nang city. Tra Que vegetables make up the unique flavors of the specialties in Hoi An such as tom huu, banh xeo, cao lau, mi quang, and more. Tra Que grows many kinds of vegetables used to make medicine and improve health as well.

When visiting Tra Que Village, you can feel the identity of a traditional village and witness the panoramic view of the green vegetable gardens. Meanwhile, the active lives of the local farmers are ongoing, as they care for and harvest their vegetables.

A grand total of 41 herbs and vegetables are currently grown by the farmers in the village. Ranging from winter melon and water spinach to amaranth and turmeric. There are only 20 days from the day the seeds are planted and harvested. They are all well-known and loved for them for their distinct Tra Que flavour.

Explore Tra Que Vegetable Village by your own

Riding bicycle around the village

For a leisurely stroll or bicycle ride through the Tra Que organic garden, perhaps stopping off at a Tra Que restaurant, no tour guide is needed and there is no entrance fee.

I recommend watching sunrise or sunset there. With the absence of buildings, Tra Que Village is an open and beautiful scenic spot. The sun looks like a huge egg, surrounded by the deep red and striped clouds, and reflected in the smooth surface of the river. Let’s enjoy the beauty of nature, and take stunning photos of this moment.

Although it’s, of course, possible to enjoy the beauty and culture of Tra Que without a guide, tours are beneficial here as they offer in-depth information and hands-on experiences with the locals.

Hanoi is always a great destination for Buddhists with many ancient pagodas and temples. Most of the old pagodas are located around West Lake. Especially, nowhere else is better than Tran Quoc Pagoda, the oldest one in Hanoi, if you are interested in Buddhism.

THE MOST VISITED TEMPLES AND PAGODAS IN HANOI

Tran Quoc Pagoda is the oldest of its kind in Hanoi, dating back to the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Ly Nam De Dynasty (544 – 548). The Buddhist shrine has undergone several changes throughout the years, particularly its renaming from An Quoc to Tran Quoc (protecting the country) by Emperor Le Huy Tong in the 17th century.

Although it’s now set on an islet within West Lake, the pagoda was originally located on banks of Red River before it’s relocated in 1615due to the river’s encroachment. Surrounded by lush greenery, Tran Quoc Pagoda was a favourite amongst the kings and royal families for festivals, full moons, and Tet Festival.

Tran Quoc pagoda – the oldest one in Hanoi (@lozjeffries)

With a history of over a thousand years, it used to be the capital of Buddhism during the Tran dynasty and now considered as a symbol of Hanoi capital, both in the past and today.

Tran Quoc pagoda renowned for its deep cultural and Buddhist values. (@jessicadaughters)

Standing at 15 metres, the main pagoda is made up of eleven levels, while its surrounding buildings include an incense burning house and a museum housing historic relics. You can also see intricately carved statues dating to 1639, each of which bear unique facial feature.

Thanks to its advantageous location just right beside the dazzling West Lake and on an island which is linked by a bridge between the two most romantic lakes of Hanoi, which are Truc Bach Lake and West Lake, the pagoda attracts a lot of tourists each day.

WEST LAKE HANOI – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Its entrance is a unique point of the pagoda. When seeing the gate from afar, it looks deflected, but there is no sense of it at all when approaching there.

The gate of Tran Quoc pagoda (@markjlwang)

Going through the gate, you need to follow the way which is paved with red brick to see the interior space.

Tien Duong (the Front House) is located in front of the bell tower and faces the west. In front of the Front House, there is an incense burner in the yard so the Buddhists and tourists can thurify.

Nha To (the Ancestor House) is on the right of Tien Duong, worshipping the previous generation of monks.

Nha Bia (the Stele House) is on the left of Tien Duong, holding 14 important steles engraved from 1813 to 1815. It shows the renovating process of the pagoda after a long time in ruin.

The three main houses are connected and make the pagoda look like a blooming lotus. It can be said that Tran Quoc pagoda is a harmonious combination of the serene ambiance of green garden, far-flung lake, and ancient and imposing architecture. That’s why it was recognized as a national monument in cultural and historical values by the Ministry of Culture and Information in 1962.

Beautiful architecture, historic artifacts and a peaceful and serene environment in the pagoda. (@tu_pham1994)

Open daily from 07:30 onwards, Tran Quoc Pagoda is free to enter all year long, though it gets packed with devotees during annual festivities such as Tet and Buddha’s Birthday. As it’s a place of worship, visitors are advised to dress conservatively out of respect for the monks and locals.

Because the pagoda is a holy sanctuary, visitors must wear clothes that strictly follow a fixed dress code. Remember to wear an appropriate outfit and do not wear skin-showing clothes.

HANOI’S PACKAGE TOURS IN 4 DAYS 3 NIGHTS ~ 1 NIGHTS IN HA LONG BAY CRUISE

Just like when you enter any other pagodas in the world, please take off hats, umbrellas, and shoes before coming into the shrines for worshipping. It shows your respect to the gods and the pagodas.

With all the historical and architectural values it possesses, Tran Quoc Pagoda is not only worth visiting as a sacred sanctuary of Buddhism attracting countless Buddhist believers; but also an indispensible destination for cultural explorers to Vietnam.
