Rubicon Tours.

6/Doc Let

Boasting around 11 miles of of chalk-white shores and turquoise waters, Doc Let is a quick, one-hour trip from Nha Trang. The north section of the scenic bay is frequented by tourists, and is home to most of the beach resort and hotels. The central section, meanwhile, has sections of pristine shores, but beware the Hyundai shipyard and busy port area.Lastly, the southern part of Doc Let, known as Jungle Beach, is a longtime backpacker favorite surrounded by fishing villages. Note that most of Doc Let is not as developed as Nha Trang, with mostly family-owned shops providing food, kayak rentals, and accommodations. The closest city is Ninh Hoa.

7/Ho Coc Beach

If you’re able to drive, take advantage of the newly-developed road out of Saigon and head to the lesser-known Ho Coc Beach on the picturesque eastern coast. Located north of the Ho Tram hamlet in the Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, the beach here is situated in a curved bay and set against a backdrop of forests and sand dunes. Though there are a number of hotels and resorts along the way, the area is mostly un-trafficked by tourists, with plenty of local seafood shacks and beach chairs for rent.

8/ Mui Ne Beach

A hop-skip from the hustle and bustle of Saigon, the area commonly referred to as Mui Ne (though it includes portions of Ham Tien ward and Phan Thiet city) is renowned for its coastline as well as a number of other natural wonders. A small fishing town with beaches to rival those on this list, Mui Ne is differentiated by a majestic, nearby expanse of desert known as the White Sand Dunes and Red Sand Dunes, which are popular for sand-surfing and even hot-air balloon rides. The best-known beach portion of the Mui Ne area, however, is actually located a quick 15-minute trip away in the Ham Tien ward, which is also home to the surreal Suoi Tien, or “Fairy Stream,” known for its hardened sand embankments and waterfall.

9/Ly Son Island

With a remote location off the central coast of Vietnam, the lesser-known Ly Son Island is a cluster of volcanic craters that’s not yet well-known among tourists. There aren’t as many palm trees and beach resorts on the two main islands, known as Dao Lon and Dao Be; instead, find many fascinating geological formations as well as over 50 temples and shrines and world-famous garlic and seafood. Much of the Dao Lon is taken up by the garlic farms, which can be smelled from miles away, but the acclaimed To Vo arch (pictured above) opens up to clear blue waters and fossil reefs.

If you’ve got time, take a 15 minute ferry to the tiny Dao Be, also known as An Binh, where you can swim off the shores and enjoy the underwater views of seaweed fields and colorful reefs.

10/Hoi An

Dating back to the 15th century, Hoi An is a tourist-loved city in Central Vietnam, whose well-preserved architecture speaks to its history as a trading port influenced by the French, Chinese, and Japanese. Nearby, find ancient ruins of the Islamic Champa kingdom that once occupied the region.

After checking out the Ancient Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, carve out some time to hit the nearby Cua Dai Beach, where three major rivers converge before reaching the sea. The calm and crystal blue water have traditionally attracted those seeking an escape, but recent resort developments have attracted larger crowds and an array of dining and drinking options.

Hoi An’s underrated gem, however, is the Cham Islands, a group of eight pristine islands lying along the coast. UNESCO has recognized the Cham Islands as one of the world’s biosphere reserves for its stunning variety of plants and marine life, which includes over 200 varieties of fish. On the main island, Hon Lao, swim at Chong Beach head up to Bac Beach to enjoy natural caves.

Considered one of the top beach destinations by both international and domestic tourists, Mui Ne has all that you need for a beach holiday: long white sandy beach lined with coconut trees, calm water for swimming and rough water for wind and wave surfing, equipment rental for snorkelling and other water-based sports.

Adding to the natural beauty is the proper development of tourist accommodations such as hotels and resorts, bungalows and hostels which queue up orderly along the stretched beach.

Farther east and north are enormous sand dunes which make a good day trip for sand surfing lovers. The rather strenuous walk to the top of the sand dunes will reward you with a breath-taking view of Mui Ne silver beach and nearby fishing village.

Otherwise you can spend your day on a jeep car to discover Cham ruins or a motor ride to visit Phan Thiet town. The market in Phan Thiet is rampant with seafood and dragon fruits. The province is also famous nationwide for its quality fish sauce.

MUI NE
Rubicon Tours.

Mui Ne has its roots in fishing, and it shows in the pace of life. It’s easy to lose track of time here, riding bicycles along the coast, spending afternoons by the pool, and dining on fresh seafood with the sound of the waves in the background. With ideal conditions for kite-surfing and windsurfing, brightly coloured kites are a fixture on Mui Ne’s beaches year-round. Over the years, this seaside retreat has evolved to offer guesthouses and resorts of every stripe. Come for the surf, stay for the mellow atmosphere.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN MUI NE:

Explore the fishing harbour

Most of Mui Ne’s appeal comes from the 12 kilometres of beach that run from nearby Phan Thiet all the way to Mui Ne proper, where the area’s original fishing village still remains. Down at the harbour, an army of brightly coloured fishing boats bob up and down with the tide. Come early in the morning to watch the fishermen unload their catch from the night before.

Try kite-surfing

Mui Ne’s dependable winds, which average above 12 knots for more than 200 days of the year, are no longer a secret. Kitesurfing schools are your best bet for finding professional instructors, and the town’s main beach is the safest area for newbies and anyone still learning the ropes. If you are an experienced or intermediate kitesurfer, you’ll find other bays and beaches sprinkled nearby.

Climb the sand dunes

Mere kilometers from the coast, a pair of massive sand dunes, one red and one white, are positioned like deserts in the middle of a seaside oasis. The red sand dunes are most accessible, however the white sand dunes, roughly 30 kilometres away, are more impressive. Try sand-sledding down the dunes, then make time to walk the freshwater Fairy Springs to see it strange natural formations, carved out of the sand by wind and rain.

Visit the Cham Towers

Mui Ne’s Cham Towers are worth a visit. Perched between Phan Thiet and Mui Ne, these thousand-year-old Hindu temples belong to the former Cham empire, a medieval kingdom which ruled much of the southern coast for centuries. From the top of the hill you’ll have a fantastic view overlooking Phan Thiet.

Dine on fresh seafood

Vendors set up camp every night along the seaside at a series of stalls with the catch of the day on offer. Just choose your fish and shellfish and tell the cooks how you’d like each one prepared. Steamed fish, grilled clams, and sweet and sour prawns are all surefire bets.

MUI NE ITINERARIES

24 hours

Take an early morning stroll down to Mui Ne Harbour, where colourful fishing boats float atop the waves. Stop to see the local market on your way. When you return, hang a right off the main road to visit Fairy Springs before grabbing a bite to eat. After lunch, hop in a cab or onto the back of a motorbike for a ride to the white sand dunes, and round out your day with a sundowner on the beach.

48 hours

For a two-day visit to Mui Ne, tack on a bit of extra R&R time at the beach in the morning, or try your hand at a water sport. In the afternoon, you can hire a bicycle and pay a visit to Mui Ne’s red sand dunes or make the trip out to the Po Shanu Cham Towers in the late afternoon for a view of Phan Thiet.

MUI NE WEATHER

You’ll find the weather is best between November and April, when a slightly cooler – but no less windy – dry season prevails. Even Mui Ne’s rainy season is fairly tame, making this a year-round destination. Tourist arrivals in the town reach their peak between November and January, and high season for kitesurfers is between November and March. It’s wise to book ahead during these months, as prices can change.

TRANSPORT TO MUI NE

Roughly 220 kilometres from Saigon, Mui Ne attracts occasional weekend visitors from Ho Chi Minh City, as well as travellers heading south from Nha Trang and Dalat. Tourist buses routinely stop along Mui Ne’s main stretch, while the local bus station lies just east on the edge of town. For train travellers, the nearest station lies in Phan Thiet, a 30-minute drive from Mui Ne.
